Feeling Like Everything’s Going Wrong? Try This One Gentle Practice

We all have those days where it feels like everything is going wrong.

Maybe your energy’s low. Maybe there’s been a family emergency, or work drama, or you’re just feeling off. Maybe it’s hormones. Or stress. Or grief. Or a combo of all of the above. Sometimes life just feels like… mud. Heavy, sticky, slow.

So what can you actually do on days like that?

💡 Look for the glimmers.

What are Glimmers?

Glimmers are small, nourishing moments that help us feel even a little bit better.

They’re the nervous system’s opposite of “triggers.”

They remind us of what’s good, what’s present, what’s real — even when everything else feels overwhelming.

Glimmers help us reconnect with a sense of:

  • Gratitude

  • Safety

  • Peace

  • Pleasure

They’re not a bypass or a toxic positivity practice — they’re a way to bring our body and mind back into the here and now, where healing and calm can exist.

Glimmers I Come Back to Again and Again

Some of my personal glimmers — the ones I turn to when it all feels a bit too much — are beautifully simple:

☀️ the warmth of sunlight on my face

🐝 watching bees move from flower to flower

☕ smelling fresh coffee… then tasting it slowly

🐦 listening to the birds outside

🐈 snuggling with my kitty

🌸 sitting on the back step, tuning out everything, just listening to nothing

🍰 enjoying a favourite snack or meal, without rushing

Most of these don’t cost a thing.

But they make a huge difference to how I feel — in my body, my mind, and my spirit.

Why Glimmers Matter in Somatic Coaching

In my somatic coaching sessions, we focus a lot on presence.

Because when we’re present, we can:

  • Regulate our nervous system

  • Feel into what’s actually here (vs. spiralling into what-if’s)

  • Let go of what we no longer need

  • Create space to feel better

Looking for glimmers isn’t about fixing everything.

It’s about softening your system enough to be able to take the next right step.

To pause. Breathe. Reconnect.

And sometimes, that’s all we need.

Try This: Your Glimmers List

Take a moment to jot down 5–10 things that bring you a sense of calm, peace, or pleasure — no matter how small.

💛 a certain scent

💛 the sound of a loved one’s voice

💛 a favourite snack

💛 being barefoot on the grass

💛 hearing a certain song

This is your glimmers list. A little nervous system toolkit to reach for when everything feels loud, heavy, or off.

Stick it on your fridge. Add it to your Notes app. Come back to it when you need a little lift.
